A Calling Reawakened: Why I’m Becoming a Doula

A New Chapter Begins

For years, I’ve felt a quiet pull - toward something sacred, purposeful, and deeply rooted in women’s wellness. I just didn’t always know what to call it. Now, after becoming a mother and reflecting on my own birth experience I’m fully committed to becoming a certified doula. This is the story of how that calling first came to me, how it was tucked away for some time, and why I’m pursuing this now.

The Moment It Sparked

In 2019 I found myself searching for more purpose in my work while also feeling a deep longing to become a mother. I was dating my high school sweetheart, freshly graduated from college with a degree I didn’t feel like I wanted to use, and working as a yoga studio manager. Though I knew marriage and motherhood were somewhere in my future, that season stirred something unexpected in me — a curiosity about birth. I began researching how someone without a medical degree could be part of the birth space, and that’s when I discovered doula work. After several late-night conversations with my boyfriend, I enrolled in an intensive weekend training. I left that weekend inspired but also unsure of how to make this a career. Without the personal experience of pregnancy or birth myself, I decided to tuck this dream away for the future and returned to my job as a leasing consultant.

My Heart For Women and Birth

Even when I wasn’t actively pursuing doula work, I kept feeling drawn back to it. I found myself quietly reading birth stories, collecting books about pregnancy and postpartum, and having deep conversations with women about their own experiences. I’ve always believed that birth is not just a physical experience — it’s emotional, spiritual, and deeply transformative. I want women to felt seen, held, and supported during one of the most life-altering experiences they’ll ever face.

How My Background Led Me Here

Over the next few years, I found my footing in multi-family housing industry — a career that challenges me and has grown me in many ways, but it doesn’t always feel connected to my deeper purpose. On the side I’ve continued to learn about birth and women’s health quietly.

Eventually, my boyfriend became my husband, and about a year later, we found out that we were expecting. Knowing what I’d learned in my doula course years before, I knew I wanted to have a doula for our own birth. After our daughter was born, my doula asked if I had ever considered becoming a doula myself — and something inside of me clicked.

What Becoming a Doula Means to Me

After encouragement from my doula, and support from my husband, I enrolled in Childbirth International’s online doula training. During maternity leave, I began working through the first module while my daughter napped beside me. Returning to work has certainly slowed my progress, but not my passion. Now that I am starting to feel settled back into the routine of work and now daycare drop offs, my goal is to get back to studying each night after bedtime. As I work through my coursework, I know that someday this quiet persistence will lead me to walk alongside other women in one of the most sacred transitions of their life.

In the meantime I’ve been able to walk with women preparing for birth which has been both exciting and encouraging! So far, I’ve met with a handful of women and their families to answer questions about birth, provide them with resources to prepare for the transition to parenthood, as well as share stories and experiences.

A Sacred Invitation

This journey is unfolding slowly, and that feels right for this season. I don’t know when I’ll fully step into birth work and take on my first client officially, but I know that I’ve already said yes in my heart. Each season of life — college, career, marriage, and motherhood — has shaped the way I hope to show up for women: not just with information, but with compassion, presence, and reverence for the sacred work of bringing life into this world.

While I’m still working through my training and balancing life as a new mother and working professional, my heart for this work continues to grow. I believe that every woman deserves to feel supported, informed, and empowered — especially before labor even begins.

If you’re an expecting mother, (or someone who loves one), I’d be honored to connect. Whether you’re simply curious about what a doula does or are looking for resources, encouragement, or a listening ear, I’d love to share what I’ve learned and help you feel more confident and grounded as you prepare for birth.

This may just be the beginning but I already know, this work matters. And I’m so grateful to be walking toward it — one step, one bedtime course, and one conversation at a time!

May this work, and the women it touches, be covered in strength, dignity, and peace.
